How much does storage cost? UK prices per GB and per TB

“How much does a hard drive cost?” has no single answer — it depends almost entirely on capacity. The fairer question is how much you pay per gigabyte or per terabyte, and that is exactly what this site tracks.

Cost per GB vs cost per TB

Storage is priced by capacity, so a raw price tells you little. Divide the price by the capacity and you get a comparable figure: cost per gigabyte (£/GB) or, for larger drives, cost per terabyte (£/TB — the same thing ×1000). A £90 drive holding 4 TB is £22.50/TB, or about £0.022/GB. Every table on disks.co.uk is ranked by this figure, so the best value is always at the top. See our £/TB explainer for the full method.

Roughly what to expect (UK, Amazon.co.uk)

Prices move daily, so treat these as ballpark ranges rather than fixed figures — check the live tables for today's numbers:

  • Large desktop HDDs (8–22 TB): usually the lowest £/TB of anything — bulk storage value.
  • Smaller HDDs (1–4 TB): higher £/TB than the big drives; the sweet spot is normally in the middle of the range.
  • SATA SSDs: several times the £/TB of a hard drive, in exchange for speed.
  • NVMe SSDs: similar to SATA SSDs per terabyte now, but far faster.

Why the price per TB varies so much

  • Capacity: £/TB usually falls as drives get bigger — see 8TB vs 2TB.
  • Technology: HDDs are cheapest per terabyte; SSDs cost more but are far faster (SSD vs HDD).
  • Purpose: NAS and enterprise drives cost more per terabyte because they're built for 24/7 use.
  • Condition: renewed/used drives show the lowest £/TB but carry more risk (renewed drives).

How to spot a genuine deal

A low price isn't automatically a good one. Open any drive to see its full Keepa price history — our product pages show the all-time and 12-month low with dates, plus 30/90/180/365-day averages, so you can tell whether today's price is genuinely cheap or just average. Watch for 24-hour drops and all-time-low flags in the tables.
