Where this data comes from
Two figures drive this page, and both are Amazon’s own, not ours. The first is the “N+ bought in past month” label Amazon prints on a listing when a product sells in enough volume to qualify. It is a bucketed figure — 50+, 100+, 1,000+ — not an exact count, and Amazon only publishes it for a minority of listings, so a drive without one is not necessarily unpopular. The second is the bestseller rank, Amazon’s position for that product within its main category, where #1 is the single best-selling item. We record both for every drive we track and refresh them about twice a day (prices refresh more often). A drive qualifies for this page if Amazon publishes a monthly figure for it, or if it sits inside the top 3,000 of its category.
What this data does not tell you is which drive is best. Sales rank measures attention as much as merit: it rewards the brands that advertise, the listings that sit at the top of Amazon’s own search results, the capacities that feel affordable in absolute terms, and the products that were discounted last week. Rank also cannot be compared across categories — #200 in a huge category is a far bigger seller than #200 in a small one — which is why we show the raw number rather than dressing it up as a score. We also hold a third sales estimate from Keepa and deliberately do not publish it: it is a model, not a measurement, and everything above is a figure Amazon itself states.
Popular is not the same as good value
The clearest finding here is the price of popularity. The best-selling drives in the UK are overwhelmingly small portable USB drives — 500GB, 1TB and 2TB — because they are cheap to buy in absolute terms, easy to understand and heavily promoted. Measured properly, per terabyte stored, they are the most expensive storage on the market. The cheapest terabytes sit in 12TB, 16TB and larger internal drives that sell a fraction of the volume. If you are buying to store a lot of data rather than to carry a little of it around, the bottom of a bestseller list is often a better place to shop than the top.
That said, a cheap terabyte is not automatically the right purchase. A 20TB internal drive is useless in a laptop bag, an SSD and a hard disk are not interchangeable, and a drive with thousands of consistent reviews carries real information that a spreadsheet of prices does not. Treat this page as the demand side of the picture and our main £/TB ranking as the value side; the drives worth buying tend to appear respectably on both.
